Do You Need an “I” exam?

When you look at the picture above, what do you see? Do you see a black dot? Why?

A few weeks ago I was talking with my pastor about some frustrating things that I was facing. While I was talking, he pulled out a piece of paper and put a black dot on it.

Holding it up, he asked, “Noah, what do you see?”

Of course, I said, “A black dot.”

Looking shocked he said, “Really? The paper is almost entirely white! Why do you focus on the dot?”

Then he colored about 15 black dots on the page and said, “Now what do you see?” Starting to realize where he was taking this, I guessed, “A mostly white piece of paper with some black dots on it?”

“Exactly. There is so much good happening around you. Even if there were several problems (dots), the majority of stuff is still going great and God is giving you ministry.”

Wow, what a different perspective! Sometimes I get caught up focusing on the “black dots” and discouraged. May be I feel like I cannot succeed or that I am spinning my wheels. Do you ever feel this way?

Usually it is because I am focused on myself and not what God is doing in and around me! If you are bogged down by all of the frustrating things around you, may be it is time for an “I-exam.”

What “dots” do you find most distracting?

Wow! That is really good! It is so easy to focus on the “dots” and forget about everything else God is doing.
